Relocating a Grand piano, whether across the street or across the world, requires special prep work and handling. Although these beautiful instruments are large and heavy, they are in fact, quite delicate in many areas. To avoid damage to the many moving parts and the sound board, all grand pianos require disassembly and require the keys to be 'tied'. We recommend crating all pianos for longer distance moves, but short distance moves, do not always require crating. Your relocation specialist can advise you as to if they believe a crate is required for your particular move.
Whether your piano is mass produced or a one of a kind antique, we take the same premium care to prepare it for safe transit. We carefully photograph and document any pre-existing damage or scratches. We then remove the music desk, key slip, blocks and keyboard cover and pull out the keyboard. Then we brace (tie) the key hammers using dowel rods and soft ties. The keyboard is then secured back into place by reassembling the blocks, key slip, and keyboard cover. The lid and hinges are removed. The lid stand is secured to the main piano body with soft ties. The lid is wrapped and placed in a custom made crate (if necessary). All the screws and pins for the hinges are packaged. The music desk, lyre, pedals and legs are carefully removed and wrapped. Then the main body of the piano is wrapped and strapped on a piano board and then placed in a crate, if necessary. All of this is done with careful precision and attention to detail by our skilled technicians to ensure your peace of mind, and the safe arrival of your beautiful instrument.
